How to Avoid the Rebate Rip-Off

Make Sure You Get Your Money

By Donna L Montaldo, About.com

Companies offer $6 billion a year in cash rebates to attract buyers, but an estimated 60 percent of those rebates are never redeemed, due partly to the difficulty in the redemption process, purposely made more complex to discourage consumers.

Most rebates go unredeemed because consumers never bother to send in the mail-in forms. But those who diligently put the forms in the mail are finding the hoops they have to jump through to get their money back almost impossible.

Complaints About Rebates On the Rise

Rebates are extremely popular with manufacturers for the very reason most of them go unredeemed. The rebate process is getting more difficult, prompting thousands of consumer complaints.

The Problems With Rebates

Many companies use rebate-processing centers, or fulfillment houses, to handle customers' rebates. In their marketing campaigns, these firms brag about their low redemption rates! There are many tricks they use to discourage consumers from getting their rebates.

Avoid Companies With Poor Rebate Redemption Policies

To be fair, not all companies make getting rebates difficult. However, the ones who do are increasing in number every day. The trick is to be able to tell what rebate policies indicate a company with a poor redemption policy.

Taking the Bait Out of Rebates

Unless otherwise stated, by law companies must pay rebates within 30 days. But there are usually deadlines on how quick you need to send in your rebate request. It's all about reading the fine print to make sure your rebate is not rejected.

How to Send in Rebates

Even if the company does not make the redemption process difficult, and especially if they do, the key to getting your money is making sure you follow all of the instructions and take all of the required steps. Here are guidelines which cover all the bases.

When Your Rebate Does Not Arrive

There are federal laws that regulate rebate offers, especially those handled through the U.S. Mail. If you fill out all of the paperwork correctly, meet the deadlines and still do not get your money, turn them into the Feds!

Rebates can be a great way for consumers to save money, especially on major purchases. But you don't get the savings if you fail to send in the proper paperwork in a timely fashion. Be informed, don't get ripped off!
